What is snagging?

Snagging is the process of identifying defects during or after any building work and is applicable to whole buildings, alterations or extensions.

It is also used by the builders to describe the process of putting right the defects listed on the snagging list.

These defects can range from minor cosmetic defects to more serious structural defects.

Snagging is often a major source of conflict in the construction industry, especially in the new build housing sector. There are a number of reasons for this:

  • Finishing standards produced by warranty providers are generous and favour the housebuilders.
  • Buyers of brand new homes expect 'Show Home' quality properties, which is not unreasonable as these are used to sell new homes.
  • Housebuilders are often more concerned with financial targets than producing new homes finished to high quality standards.
